General Information About Putnam County

Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York, with a population of 97,668 as of the 2020 census. The county seat is Carmel, and the county is named for Israel Putnam, a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War.

Putnam County is one of the best places to live in New York, with highly rated public schools, charming villages, and protected heritage sites. It is also a great place to work and play, with lakes and farmland, and a western shoreline on the Hudson River. Putnam County is increasingly considered part of Downstate New York, as it is a 45 to 50-minute drive to Times Square and Grand Central Terminal is a one-hour train ride away.

However, even in such a beautiful and peaceful county, accidents can happen. Whether you have been injured in a car crash, a slip and fall, a dog bite, or any other type of incident caused by someone else’s negligence, you deserve to be compensated for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.

That’s why you need a lawyer who can fight for your rights and interests in the Putnam County court system. The county has three courts: the County Court, which handles felony criminal cases and civil cases up to $25,000; the Surrogate’s Court, which handles probate and estate matters; and the Family Court, which handles domestic relations cases. In addition, each of the six towns and three villages in Putnam County has its own Justice Court, which handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, small claims, and landlord-tenant disputes.
